The Senior Software Engineer, XML Data Specialist is responsible for providing a coherent and scalable approach to managing the 100 million+ content documents stored by PubFactory. A successful person in this role will look to embrace new technologies to improve user experience for search and retrieval of full text data with semi-structured meta-data. The candidate should have a passion for well formed XML schemas and wrangling customer data into well behaved resources.

The Senior Software Engineer, XML Data Specialist will be expected to:

  1. Assume technical ownership and leadership for PubFactory XML data schemas, content ingestion, and XML data transformation. This person will work with application developers to determine the proper responsibilities between data management and application features
  2. Drive consistent upgrades of our current document store (solr) and adoption of other technologies as appropriate.
  3. Define, document and promulgate standards for all customer supplied content
  4. Implement content work flows, ingestion and other business functions in Java and XSLT
  5. Work with Project Managers on clarifying requirements for complex features
  6. Contribute to sophisticated systems that interface with multiple systems or teams
  7. Provide technical leadership and guidance to other XML Data Specialist team members
  8. Write reliable, well-documented, well-tested code consistently and predictably, and complete development tickets with high velocity
  9. Troubleshoot, debug and upgrade existing systems
  10. Work with QA and Project Managers to explain technical issues in relevant detail
  11. Provide consistent and reliable estimates of duration and difficulty
  12. Demonstrate quality coding practices and style through example
  13. Participate in frequent code reviews
  14. Attend relevant technical conferences and stay current with best practices and industry trends


A Senior Software Engineer, XML Data Specialist is expected to have more than 5 years of solid, active commercial software development work, including significant personal ownership of projects or initiatives.


  1. Four-year college degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent education and experience in relevant field
  2. 5+ years experience developing software
  3. 3+ years in a lead development role
  4. Ability to speak, read, and write in English
  5. XML and XSLT
  6. Java programming
  7. XQuery
  8. XML Schemas including relax NG, DTDs and XML Schema
  9. Web Application Development

The ideal applicant will have the following traits, including strong working knowledge of…

  1. Knowledge of publishing content standards such as JATS/BITS XML, ePub, and ONIX
  2. NoSQL databases, specifically Solr with Lucene; MarkLogic is a plus
  3. Agile Development
  4. Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills
  5. Collaborative, teamwork based approach to solving problems
